What is leak detection?

Leak detection is how we find where water is escaping before anyone starts opening up your home.

Water can run along the outside of a pipe, soak into a wall, or travel under a slab. The damp patch you can see is often not the break. Finding the source first means the repair can be small and targeted, instead of a guessing game.

What are the common signs of a leak?

Most leaks show themselves in the end. These are the ones people usually notice first:

• The water bill jumps and nothing in the house has changed.
• You can hear water running or hissing when every tap is off.
• Damp patches, bubbling paint, or a musty smell in a wall, ceiling, or floor.
• One part of the garden stays green and soggy in dry weather.
• Mould keeps coming back in the same spot.
• The hot water unit runs more than it used to, or the pressure has dropped.
• Tiles or floorboards feel spongy, or they have started lifting.

Here is a simple check you can do. Turn off every tap and every appliance that uses water, then look at the water meter. If the dial is still moving, water is going somewhere it should not, and that is worth a call.

How do you find a leak?

We start by asking you what you have noticed, when it started, and where the plumbing runs. That narrows things down before we touch anything.

From there we use the usual tools of the trade. Pressure testing shows whether a line is holding or losing water. A camera lets us look inside a drain instead of guessing. Checking moisture through walls and floors helps us tell a leaking pipe from a shower that is not sealed, or from water coming in from outside.

None of this is a brand trick. It is careful work, so we are not opening three walls to find one small hole.

What if the leak is under the slab or inside a wall?

Those are the jobs worth taking slowly. We narrow the area as tightly as we can first, so if something does need to be opened, the opening is as small as we can make it.

When should I call about a leak?

Call straight away if water is flowing and you cannot stop it, a pipe has burst, sewage is backing up, or you have no water. If you can smell gas, get somewhere safe first, then call us.

A damp patch that has been there a while, or a tap that keeps dripping, does not need panic. Do not sit on it either. Slow leaks rarely fix themselves, and the longer water sits against timber and plaster, the more you end up replacing.

What should I do while I wait?

If it is safe, turn the water off at the meter. Move anything you care about off the wet floor. Stop using the fixture that is causing trouble, and leave a clear path to the area. Photos of what you are seeing help us understand the job before we arrive.

The first half-hour is about getting on top of the problem. In that time we aim to make the situation safe, prevent further damage where possible, and assess the cause.
